The Nonprofit Metric That Changes Everything
Cost per outcome sounds simple, but most organizations cannot produce it on demand. A practical way to model it from program data you already collect.
Funders increasingly ask a version of one question: what does it cost you to produce the outcome you promised? Cost per placement, per credential, per stably housed household. Organizations that can answer credibly renew; organizations that answer with activity counts struggle.
The numerator is an allocation problem. Direct program costs are easy; the work is deciding how to attribute shared staff time and overhead, then writing that rule down so the number is comparable year over year.
The denominator is a definition problem. What counts as an outcome, over what window, and verified how? A defensible definition is narrow, dated, and documented, even when a broader one would look better in a report.
Once both exist, the metric becomes a management tool rather than a compliance exercise. It shows which delivery models are efficient, which sites need support, and where an additional dollar buys the most outcome, which is precisely the argument a renewal conversation needs.
